Normally, preventing hard-to-debug errors is the reason 
for scoping.

"It's good form" only works if you're the boss, and everyone
knows it's short for "It's good form, I want it done that way, 
and if you won't do it, you need to find another job"

Scoping doesn't prevent cavities, conserve energy, or get 
you into heaven.

I suppose you could tell your coworker that Michael
McDermott was stressed out because his coworkers
weren't scoping their variables, and mention a little
later that your dog was trying to convince you to call
in sick today, so you could clean your AK-47....
