Photographers (and other creative folks, like writers) are happy to have
their work appear in print as long as they get compensated - that's how they
make a living. (Typically, a photographer sells a magazine the right to
publish a photo *one time*, but retains the right of ownership to the
original photo and the right to control the other ways in which it is
reproduced, so they can be compensated for that photo's use each time it is
used.) If someone scans their photo and uses it without permission, the
photog's ability  to make a living is essentially being undermined. IMO,
creative folks have every *right* to control the use of their work, and
should be VERY wary of putting high-resolution (reproducible) images out on
the web.
