uh, true - but also 12px on a Sun, or other hi-res platform ...

A 12px Helvetica font on my Windows display: 17" monitor @ 1024 x 768
is comfortably readable; the same on my Sun: 17" monitor @ 1152 x 900
is barely readable, and newer Suns have resolutions up to 1600 x 1200.

My current practice is to use relative sizes ("large", "medium", etc.)
to allow scaling per the user's personal font preferences setting.

YMMV!
