This might sound stupid or smart-assed but it's true: "The manuals 
that come with it are generally excellent" ... I'd suggest getting a 
JavaScript book and learning JavaScript (ActionScript is ECMA Script 
with Flash-specific objects) - that way you come out the other end 
knowing both JavaScript and Actionscript ...

Helen Triolio's site might be a better starting point than the manual 
if you just want to jump in to ActionScript:
