that was my preferred approach, but i couldn't get apache to do it - at 
least not without fiddling with a lot of other settings which i don't want 
to do, as it may affect things like the connection to LDAP and the many 
other web applications on the server.  (this is a phone company, and much 
of the company runs on these web apps)
