There are WDDX libraries for Java, COM/ASP, Perl, Javascript.. Most web dev platforms, plus an XML DTD for integration with any XML app. The DTD has comments that sum it up pretty well:

You can download the WDDX SDK and become a WDDX God in about a half-hour. :)   Well, maybe not, but you can at least have a good understanding of what it is, it's limitations, and most importantly, how to use it:
