Scenes are only good for keeping your movie organized in the 
authoring environment and once you get the gestalt of movieclips 
you'll have no use for scenes.

But any transition is going to use a tween of some sort (transitions 
between scenes are always instantaneous) - it sounds like your 
bitmaps will be relatively large, so "best practice" would involve a 
transition that redraws only a portion of the screen each frame - as 
the size of the area  redrawn is almost always the bottleneck in 
Flash and it's choppy if you try to redraw too much. Like a swipe 
effect or checkerboard dissolve" would be good if that makes sense.

PS - there's lots of mailing lists, forums and newsgroups dedicated 
solely to Flash - and you're right, there's tons of ways to 
accomplish same or similar things - so lurking on Flash lists is 
really helpful.
