Without more background informations, I really only see two parameters here
: price and personnal preferences
- price : coldfusion is not free, php is. This obviously has "some impact"
on developement and production cost.
- personnal preferences : try them both. Look at the sources of a simple
application written in both langages, like (for example) a database'd
guestbook.
Don't forget the others tools too.
More than that is hard to tell, because it's really a matter of personnal
choices. Do you have programing experience? Will you work in a team? Do you
want a *nix or win* solution? Do you need commercial help?
In my case, price, opensource-ness, community, availability of docs were the
things I took into account.
I choose php, and now I'm converting to zope (which is not a langage by the
way, it's a concept).
Imho basically every web langages are the same (in short : only the syntax
is different). Choose the one you are the most confident with.
Good luck !
Philippe
