PHP and MySQL We Development by Luke Welling and Laura Thomson

The book covers basic PHP and MySQL concepts with easy to follow examples
for practice. Shows you how to set up a testing environment (on your PC)
with both PHP and MySQL provided on the enclosed CD-ROM.

The first few chapters go over the basic concepts and from there the
chapters go more in depth towards advanced techniques using PHP and MySQL.
This includes retrieving and storing information in flat text files, string
manipulations using regular expressions, arrays, File system management,
functions, object oriented PHP, setting up E-commerce and security (shopping
carts etc.), content management systems and web-based E-Mail services.

This is a few of the things that this books goes over and IMHO this is a
really good book structured and geared for someone just learning PHP.
However this book is not the de-facto of the field (No book is!) so you
might want to consider getting another book that is more of a reference book
etc...

HTH,

Michael

Subject: [thelist] best PHP Book anybody?

Hi,

I am in an awkard situation...I taking a web design and development
course (mostly for the certificate than anything else...long story...)
and after 3 1/2 months I am finally seeing something I didn't know
before...PHP!
Because the course is a short term course a bunch of languages were
compressed in just a few months which makes them all confusing after a
while...
I bought two good books to go deeper into ASP and XML but I have no idea
which book to buy to learn more about PHP as we won't be seeing it in
depth at all.
Anybody out there has any pros/cons about specific books in the market?
My teacher told me to get the Beginning PHP4 by Wrox but I wanted to
have more opinions before investing on the books....

Thanks,
