[thelist] READ: offtopic posts are not ok

thelist,

Recently it seems that the number of offtopic posts have
skyrocketed. Personally, I figured this was an isolated problem with one
thread. However, since then, I've seen other posts that were just as
offtopic.

If you feel someone has personally attacked your onlist or offlist, please
be man (or woman) enough to ask them for clarification offlist. There are
a good 2000 people on this list and they don't all need to hear that you
felt attacked. Especially when 99.9999999% of the time it's just a
misunderstanding.

thelist is not the proper forum for job postings. The proper forum is the
Jobs category on the evolt.org
website: http://evolt.org/category/index.html?tid=23
This helps the admins make sure that a job posting has enough information
*before* it is posted (approved). This helps keep "can you provide
information on the X aspect of this job?" questions from popping up in
2000 peoples' inboxes.

Just in general, before you send a post out the thelist, ask yourself "do
2000 people need to read this, or just one or two?' If the latter, please
consider sending the message offlist.

Tips are not a punishment and they aren't something to keep people from
posting offtopic posts. They are a way to help a member who absolutely
*must* send 2000 people an offtopic post to make that post a little more
helpful and useful to those 2000 people.

This is all in the interest of keeping thelist's quality high.

Thanks,
