thanks for the kind words -- you too, jon

you know, since you're in toronto, you can always phone me -- but if it's

you've seen by now from the other answers that LIKE is what you want

the only unresolved question that no one has addressed is whether the
percent sign is the wildcard character for your particular database

in microsoft access, the standard underscore and percent characters are
replaced by the question mark and asterisk

this may have changed in recent versions of access, the latest i had my
hands on was access 97 (see also
http://www.adopenstatic.com/faq/likequeries.asp -- yes, the same web site
that has the canonical "why SELECT * is bad" article)

also, test your sql in a query window or query tool directly against the
database, because there might be a complication in testing it through your
web interface, which might be inserting the wildcards for you (a common
usability practice)
