Got it!!

When you select export as animated gif, there ARE a few settings you can
change.  The default is 72DPI and "standard colors".  I left the dpi alone,
but switched the colors to 256 colors and it came out beautifully!  Awesome!
File size ended up at 64K for a 500x100px animation that flows very
smoothly.

Not too shabby.........
