I learned HTML from the http://www.htmlgoodies.com site. What I found
particularly useful was that there is a companion book which is exactly the
same as the online tutorials, so you can have the book as a constant
reference but also see how all the scripts are supposed to look on-line. Two
things to consider though...

1. I found the HTML book brilliant, but the JavaScript one has a lot of
errors in it which made it a bit confusing at times.
2. The author thinks he is funny! It is a quite light-hearted book, which I
found easy to get on with, but does get a bit irritating sometimes.
