[thelist] limit the size on entry on multiline text areas

Hi,
I'm looking for any ideas about how to limit the
amount of input that can be placed in a textarea
field.

I want to accept a max of 140 chars spread out over 2
lines.  While I display the textarea with 2 70 char
lines, that doesn't stop the user from typing to no
end.  What kind of techniques can I use to limit the
user in this scenario?

(I'm feeding a legacy DB behind the scenes, so my
hands are tied when it comes to accepting more data.)
