if you're executing this bit of code within a custom tag then it would work
fine.  however, if you're trying to execute it outside of a custom tag
you'll get an error that attributes is not defined.  that's because the
attributes scope doesn't exist outside of a custom tag.  despite this fact,
the attributes scope is advocated by the fusebox methodology and used by
many.

this is a very valid concern.
