Dunno about .mbx or Win2000 but this might help...

For archiving old email messages stored in Outlook Express folders, I
periodically extract them to individual .eml files using the freeware
DBxtract, rename them all as .txt files and then zip them all up.   That's
how I manage my archive of tens of thousands of evolt messages.  DBxtract
also works on .dbx files which are not in your OE folders path, so you could
simply (and quickly) archive the folders themselves just by backing up the
.dbx files and then use DBxtract when you need to find that old message.

Searching the .zips is then simple using something like ZipMagic, (and you
can use StartUpMonitor to prevent ZipMagic registering itself to always run
at start up).
