Memo from Martin P Burns of PricewaterhouseCoopers

-------------------- Start of message text --------------------

I wouldn't quite go as far as to say 'always' uncheck the box.

However, you should think very carefully about the site and how much
you trust the company. Large, well known brands are less likely to
spam, because
1) They don't want to upset their consumers
2) They're afraid of future repercussions should the legislative framework
    change
3) They've read Seth Godin's Permission Marketing - spamming is just
not profitable in the long term.

Also, which country they're in - UK (and most EU) legislation is *much*
stricter
on data protection, and there are few spamming exceptions.

Cheers
Martin

Oops, one very important thing I forgot to mention about avoiding spam.

Many sites have a little "gotcha" in their signup process . This is usually
a checkbox that says something along the lines of "Site XYZ ocassionally
sends out special offers from our partners. Uncheck this box if you don't
want to receive such mail".

The sad part is that this box is almost always checked by default and
sometimes the language is made really obscure so people won't bother
reading all of it.

ALWAYS uncheck this box in the registration process. Don't let the sites
pull a fast one on you.
