You export to a different format.  BTW, Photoshop is the same way. 
Give it time and you will love Fireworks. It's really a great product
for Web image production.  PNG is a great source and final image
format.

Yes, Fireworks is VERY DIFFERENT from PSP.  The similarities are only
skin deep.  Fireworks assumes an entirely different mental model than
PSP.
