trying to implement something like this in an environment that's a)
stateless,  b) is not instantaneous in its response, and c) has multiple
points of failure is a mission of failure.  the http protocol was never
designed for this sort of instant gratification.

sounds to me like you need to step back from the problem and find a new
approach (see above for why).

"beast" -- that's a good name for it.  anytime you venture away from the
browser basics you're asking for incompatibility.  somewhere i read about an
implementation for mac/ie that allowed communication between an activex
control and javascript using apple events of all things as the go between.

however, after some digging it appears that this won't allow synchronous
communication, but rather asynchronous.
