[thelist] What is this link usage and advantage?

This may be obvious to some of you, but I recently came across a site
using links like this (check left hand menu):
http://www.sportsmed.com.au/sportsmed/about_us.html?page_id=2

What are they doing and what advantages does it bring? Is this a
database reference or something to do with findObject?
