what's the minor version number?  anything older than 3.02/32bit doesn't
support external javascript files.  none of the 16bit versions support them
as far as i remember.

yup, cause ie3 isn't loading the external file.  so, to it, the function is
undefined.

none of the above.  it's a support issue.  ie3 simply doesn't support
external javascript files.  fwiw, neither does nn2.0.  that's because
external files were introduced in js1.1.
