you can edit your host file to tell your computer to look for certain URL's
famous for advertising (ads.doubleclick.com, x10.com, etc....the whole list
is on this guy's site) at 127.0.0.1. It won' tfind the ads there, and will
rather quickly return a 404 error. Doesn't stop windows from popping up, but
it prevents most of thos windows from displaying any content.
