hmm, that made me wanna look harder for the culprit.  it seems it's a
checkbox in the edit screen for odbc settings in the coldfusion
administrator:

  "Maintain database connections - Check this
   box to maintain connections to data sources
   across client requests."

i'll bet that unchecking that would release the connection after each
request.
