As big as it needs to be...

My point is, there's really no set size. Usually, designers want to be
sure the most important content is "above the fold" (an old newspaper
term) - meaning a user doesn't have to scroll down to see the content.
You want to be sure your header doesn't impede that in any way. Other
than that, design whatever you want!
