Is this some sort of realization that people are supposed to make?
According to who?  If you look into it, you will find that many talented
programmers are also talented in other fields (musicians, for example).
Ever been to Austin, TX?  To think that people in general don't have the
ability to be talented in multiple fields seems to be an underestimation of
capability.

However, I _do_ agree that most people tend to concentrate on certain areas
day-in and day-out in their work environment.  It is that area in which
they become specialized.  Not many environments provide the opportunity,
much less the time, to work with these separate technologies.
