[thelist] Javascript: Cookie

I feel stupid for asking this but some odd reason I am stuck on this one:

I am "trying" to build a simple javascript that checks a value set in a
cookie that is in session.  First it checks to see if they have the cookie
and if not then do this, if so do this if this value is equal to that value.
  Everytime a user runs the function the "stored" value is undefined.  Can
someone help please!
