Fetch is more or less the Mac user's FTP client of choice. It's
unlikely to be the cause of your problems. Version 4 is a thing of
beauty, IMO.

Humour me and try opening one of the files causing the error in
bbedit lite. The odds are good, I think, that simpletext has either
added text style information to what should be a plain text file, or
some other nonsense that your perl interpreter is choking on.
