Memo from Martin P Burns of PricewaterhouseCoopers

-------------------- Start of message text --------------------

The European Commission has adopted a decision setting out standard
contractual clauses for the transfer of personal data to businesses using
the data that are established in countries outside the EEA, other than
those countries that are recognised as offering an adequate level of data
protection. The decision simplifies the process for companies and
organisations wishing or needing to transfer personal data for "processing"
(a term which covers any use of the data in a third country). In
particular, the decision offers companies a straightforward means of
complying with their legal obligation to ensure "adequate protection" for
personal data transferred to countries outside the EU. Use of these
standard contractual clauses will be voluntary. For more information, see

Cooking up cookies contention
************************************
The Office of the Information Commissioner wants to make it obligatory for
UK web sites to gain prior consent from users before sending them cookies,
according to a report by ZD Net News. This opt-in approach goes against the
most recent European proposals. For more information, see

Cheers
Martin
