Okay, metaphorically you are in danger of the proverbial sleeveless
denim jacket over leather. Black Sabbath were fab. *in the seventies* To
your extreme credit you are taking a leap of faith. Good for you! Here's
my recommendations:

1:  CSS and 'liquid design' theory. IMO it's no longer acceptable to
desing fixed width tables at 600px with hard coded fonts, join the
css-discuss mailing list, it's a breath of fresh air.

2: PHP, (or at leas /one/ server side lang) It's easy and you'll enjoy
it. There's some stuff on my site that relates to your post. Check out
the url in my sig.

3: JS, I'm working on that and the reason I've put it after PHP is that
JS is mostly but not all, bells an whistles. Nothing wrong with that and
it's very complimentory to XHTML but you'll get more genuine use out PHP
to start with.
