You're right -- it was an exception, but not in that particular code.

I put in a try-catch block, but accidentally in the wrong place, and by
pure luck I got the error.

I wasn't expecting an exception -- I've found that I usually get a big 500
error screen when that happens, so not seeing one led me to believe that
something was screwy with the DB.
