[thelist] "Foreign" characters in text mail

Hi folks!

Our company sens a weekly newsletter to subscribers, which we send using
plain text formatting with the bulkmail facility in Jmail. As we are a
Swedish company, our mails include the letters åäöÅÄÖ. I have had a
subscriber send me a printout of a mail showing that the extended characters
have become mixed up with other strange characters.

The problem is that at present I do not know which mail program or which
platform she is using. However, when I use Mutt as my mail client on BSD I
get the same effect - ö becomes ÷ for instance.

If I were using HTML in the mailouts, I would simply use character entities
instead, but as we are using plain text, I wonder if there is anything we
should be setting in the headers that can correct this, or whether the
problem is insurmountable.

Any ideas you internationalisation people out there?
