As far as I know, this is what I have learned.
All browsers support xhtml -- but with a few minor quirks.
<br/> won't display correctly in some version < 4.x browsers (like NN). In
order to get this to work, you have to put a space after the / as in
<br />

Other than that ... XHTML away!
Bring on the karmic goodness.
