[thelist] question layers vs ilayers vs frames

He people,

Got a question about loading content. In the old days,
I used frames (I know I said the evil word ;-)) to
make sure that each time a user selected an option
from the navigation, the page would only load the new
content and left the navigation frame alone, thus
saving time on loading.

What do you people use nowadays?? Layers?? Is it
possible to load content into a specific layer??
Something like:

----------------------------------|
          navigation (layer I)    |
----------------------------------|
          content  (layer II)     |
                                  |
----------------------------------|
