I have access to unix hosting and this is an option - however, it can be
a right pain figuring out which WHOIS server to use to look up obscure
TLDs (unless there's some fantastic command line option I haven't found
yet). Also it's a lot more convenient to have whois available in a web
browser (saves me having to fire up an SSH terminal) - and thanks to
Mozilla's shortcut feature all I have to type is "whois domain.com" in
the location bar and it runs the search on GeekTools for me.

Thanks everyone who replied - I've gone with geektools as it seems to
have the best "select server automatically" function :)
