>1) Is there any competitive advantage that a company has in not disclosing
this information?

Very much so.....keeping the competitive advantage by coding to your
customers requirements based on you own browser stats is a very important
part of any web site. If Amazon have access to a larger customer base than
say Barnes and noble they will have a better idea of how to control the
user-by-user content and visuals for the general consumer market.

On the flip side generic customer base sites may be interested in the user
details more specialist sites - in order to target specific markets. See the
variance in the result sets from the previously supplied site
http://www.upsdell.com/BrowserNews/stat.htm .

>2) If so, by offering to mask their information would it be more likely
that
they would provide the information?

no - why give up the competitive advantage

>4) Would you as a designer, find the extremely helpful?

Yes of course - especially from the first three source you mention because
they represent the destinations of 'your average punter'. But as pointed out
before - 'average punter' insider marketing info is very desirable -> see
Spyware.
