I think that's a little unfair, considering that the HTML 4.0 and XHTML
specs came several years after massive distribution of browsers which
relied on the EMBED tag for any extensions.... ;-)

Recap: You can validate to the strictest specs, or validate to your
audience, but it can be hard to do both simultaneously, at least with your
current audience's viewing setups.
