how about popularity or what the majority use ?
a search for "web site" on google returned 5,310,000 results
and a spelling suggestion "Did you mean: "website".

a search for "website" returned 43,500,000 results, about 8 times more.

although, I am still inclined to believe that "Web site" is the correct
usage of the word,  but as one of the other evolters pointed out...
these things tend to creep into the vocab. and eventually get replaced
as new standards (after all, if majority are using "website", then it's
already implicit that the use of the word has become more standardized
than  "web site").

you can stick to either one... you can't go wrong
