the responsibility to keep it current. Letting it lapse - then complaining
that someone 'took' it from him - is invalid.

We can certainly agree in part.

Letting it lapse, then seeking to remedy that afterwards, is less effective
than not letting it expire at all.

And the points you made in your original post about using a registrar that
notifies you BUNCHES, are also good ones.
