Yes, and that snippet doesn't even tell the whole story.

Cue Cats were given away at Radio Shack. People got them, opened them up and
turned them into general purpose bar code scanners, then wrote about it on
web sites, prompting Belo to threaten patent infringement action.

In addition, you were supposed to hook up your TV to your PC, then when the
local (Belo, Channel 8) news ran here in Dallas, they would send out a
"tone" that your PC could translate into a URL to direct you to their site
for "more information".

It was lots of fun to watch that whole affair.
