X-Stat is a free stat counter written in PHP. It's the one that I use.
It comes pre-configured to display an icon on the page that you want to
track, however this can be easily remidied by a little tweaking of the
source.

There were some serious security bugs in previous versions, but the
author has plugged them in 2.4
