If you made your payment more than 45 days ago, the three years will
transfer with the names - PLUS you'll pay for and get an additional
year with whoever you transfer to...

If your payment to NS was within the last 45 days, 60 days to be safe,
then wait until at least 45 days have gone by before you do the transfer.
However long it has been, check the WHOIS (which is NOT definitive, but
usually close enough) to confirm that the Expiration Date shows your
paid time. If not, wait. If waiting doesn't solve this, contact NS
(good luck) and get this fixed before you transfer.

Put all your eggs in the same basket, as long as the basket is a good one.
I have issues with godaddy, but most folks have good experiences, so go
for it.
