[thelist] Javascript and selectedIndex

Hi,

I am having a problem with Javascript and the selectedIndex attribute.  I'm
no guru (I can't even call myself a newbie yet) and I think this is a guru
type question.

I tried writing it up here and it just looked SO ugly so I put the question
online and formatted nicely.
