i think many people tried the tableless layout approach, saw how many hacks
were involved, and quietly kept on using tables for their production work,
while continuing to experiment with css for non-essential and personal
sites

most weren't asleep, and therefore didn't need to wake up

then one day, zeldman blew the whistle

and ever since, it is once again okay to use tables and not hide the fact

i am not suggesting that tableless layout is doomed, in fact much can be
done with css, and we need the experimenters to go on experimenting

i just wish people would finally wake up and realize there's something
wrong with multicolumn layout itself, never mind if it's done with tables
or divs
