you might try something else instead.

deleteLink = document.createElement('A');
deleteLink.href = 'JavaScript://';
deleteLink.htmlFor = 'cb_' + id;
deleteLink.onclick = function()
{

  cb = this.htmlFor;

this is off the top of my head and untested.
