Thanks to everyone that helped out.

It turns out that the newest versions of Acrobat Reader are very picky about
the file structure of PDF files. This can be a problem if you are using an
application other than the full version of Adobe Acrobat to create the PDF
file, or if you email the PDF without zipping it up first. Both of these
things can cause the file to become corrupted, or imperfect in some way. So,
a tip:

1. Use Adobe Acrobat (full version) to create them.
2. If e-mailing them, or having them e-mailed to you, ensure they are zipped
before attaching them.
3. When FTPing PDF files, upload them in binary format - if you upload them
as ASCII or text or have your settings on automatic, they can get corrupted.
