Ok, I guess I owe a tip then...

Checkboxes can sometimes behave strangely either when in table cells
or otherwise, and especially with colored backgrounds. To get the
checkbox to be the right width in a cell (not too wide) and to have
it show the background color (not a white box) you can style it like
so:

background: transparent;
width: auto;
}
