hehe... sorry i just saw this post.

the reason for that is because my workstation is the only one that needs
to be able to access it and it's not much more difficult (now that i've
done it correctly) to do it this way than to make a virtual directory or
something else like that.

i also wanted to make it as logically seperated as possible. a subdomain
works better for me (in my head) than www.domain.com/dev/ or whatever
else.
