I'm fond of http://www.guardian.co.uk

they're running vignette as their content management system and therefore
their coding is "poor" (inline font tags and bgcolor and all sorts of other
"nasties") but it's simple to use for such a large system.

and of course there's http://news.bbc.co.uk/

i would argue that you want to keep the "design" of a newspaper site to a
minimum - users are there to find information quickly. trying to dress up
that information will only make it less usable.
