 From the protocol POV:
anonymous FTP at least maintains a persistent connection from client to
server.  It is really not very efficient for downloading many files
because each file requires a renegotiation before transfer, and you will
get better performance if you download the CD images.  You should incur
just as muct delay, if not more, when using http for many files.
