[thelist] Filled form field on back button

Hi,

I have 3 pages that to be able to access their content the user has to
login. Each page does a username/password check against the db and if
correct it loads the info if not it loads a page called register with
the login form.
The problem is that every time it goes to login (4 fields need to be
correct) all the fields are empty again.
I am having a hard time figuring a way to have the fields filled (with
the exception of password) on either back button or clicking on the link
to another page.
I tried creating a different system where the user would login on one
page and then if the login was correct it would create a session which
would be checked on each page but my system didn't really work....
As you can see I am a novice in this area.
Could you give me a tip of what I need to do  (or am doing wrong) to
achieve the result I want?
